Lets find out who the prophet like Moses is…
Deuteronomy 18:17-18
17And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
Today there is a misconception that has been put in the the minds of many, by the established christian powers, that we no longer need to read the so called old testament books, and that just reading the so called new testament is enough….
But if we look into the book of deuteronomy chapter 18 we see a promise of a prophet to come who would be like Moses, that would save YHWH’s people the Israelites. With out reading this book there is no way that anybody would know that a saviour for the children of Israel (and any one else that believes in him) was to come.
If we read both new and old testment we can find out which other prophet was similar to Moses and was prophesied to come, for his people and anyone that would believe in his purpose for coming.
In Isaiah 53 See the Messiahs Purpose article here if we read we see prophecy, that gives us more information about some one who was to come to die for the sins of the world.
Isaiah 53:3-4
3He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Let’s deal with the prophecy in Deuteronomy 18:17-18 to find found out what prophet came that was a prophet like Moses -
Here are two things:
At the time Moses was born the scriptures say that pharoah had made a decree to kill all male born sons
Exodus 1:15-16
15And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
16And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
So we see the order given to the eygptian midwives to kill all the sons born to Israelites. After this in the next chapter a child is born to an Israelite levite lady, who gives birth to Moses, hiding him for 3 months until eventually she had to send him away.
Exodus 2:1-5
1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of
Levi.2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.
4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
When we read the New testament we see also that the messiah was in danger of being killed when he was a baby.
Matthew 2:13-21
13And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
14When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
19But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.
21And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
It is also important to see here that Joseph was told to take the Messiah and go to eygpt, the same place that Moses came out from, then later when Herod died the Messiah as a baby was taken back to Israel.
Moses was called to save his people from the bondage that they were serving in egypt, which is why YHWH chose him
Exodus 3:1-12
1Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
2And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
3And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
4And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.
10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?
12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
Just as Moses was sent by YHWH to save Israel so was the Messiah sen by YHWH to save Israel as he says in Matthew.
Matthew 15:24
24But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
The scriptures above show the Messiah was prophet like Moses, it is obvious that the Messiah was greater than Moses as he said that he existed before Abraham.
He was like Moses because he came to save his people Israel, as Moses was sent to save Israel out of Egypt. The Messiahs savation for Israel was the fulfilment of the prophecy which would give his people a way back to YHWH, by laying down his life. as seen in Isaiah 53 See the artilce about the Messiahs Purpose
If there is any doubt that the Messiah was the prophet spoke of in Deuteronomy 18:18 it id cleared up in the book of John.
John 1:45-47
45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
It is also worth noticcing that the Messiah calls Nathanel an Israelite, which shows that the Messiah was fully aware who the Israelites were. So we know that all the scriptures are good if we want to get a proper understaning.
Peace and Shalom
